Job Summary
We are constantly improving and developing our company, and now we are ready to establish an internal IT position. As Head of IT, Infrastructure & Digitalisation you will lead and oversee all foundational IT services and needs at 21st.BIO. This position is critical to our global operations ensuring that our IT landscape – ranging from our Azure environment and AWS cloud to everyday hardware and software – remains secure, efficient, and reliable. You will report directly to the Chief of Development and R&D Operations, who is part of the managing directors of the company and collaborate with colleagues across the company, to provide helpful and seamless IT solutions that support our rapid growth and mission to leverage biological data to build a more sustainable future.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud & Infrastructure Management
Manage and optimize our Microsoft Azure and AWS environments, ensuring robust security, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
Oversee integrations with cloud-native third-party solutions, such as Benchling, implementing best practices for security and scalability.
Hardware & Software Oversight
Provide strategic direction for all company-wide IT hardware and software needs, including laptops, mobile devices, and network requirements.
Manage vendor relationships, licenses, procurement, and maintenance to ensure seamless operations.
Security & Compliance
Take on the role of Chief Information Security Officer in 21st.Bio
Develop and implement security protocols and policies to safeguard company data and systems, with an emphasis on cloud security and industry compliance standards.
Continuously assess and update security measures to stay ahead of emerging threats.
Strategic Leadership
Align IT objectives with organizational goals, driving innovation and continuous improvement.
Budget & Vendor Management
Oversee the IT budget, working closely with finance and senior leadership to ensure cost-effective operations.
Negotiate and manage contracts with external vendors and service providers.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
Work cross-functionally with scientific, operational, and administrative teams to meet diverse IT requirements.
Provide regular updates and recommendations to stakeholders on IT strategy, infrastructure status, and emerging technologies such as AI.
Requirements
It is not just what you know, but how you think!
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
7+ years of progressive IT leadership experience, ideally in a high-growth or fast-paced environment.
In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Azure and AWS cloud ecosystems, including security best practices, integrations, and scaling solutions.
Proven track record in hardware/software lifecycle management, vendor negotiations, and budget oversight.
Strong understanding of IT security measures, compliance frameworks, and cloud-native security.
Excellent communication, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
A proactive mindset with the ability to anticipate issues, propose solutions, and drive continuous improvement.
Flexible – as we are spread across two locations with a 9-hour time-difference, working at odd hours must be expected.
Fluency in English.
Ability to thrive in a mildly chaotic, start-up oriented and mission-driven environment, embracing challenges with enthusiasm.
